My writing is dedicated to the eldest daughters of immigrant families, the lovers, the fat women, the women whose skin matches the earth, the survivors -and to my own mother.

May we all be seen & witnessed, in all our fullness.

Brenda was born in Guaymas, Sonora Mexico and shortly after her 1st birthday, her parents immigrated to the U.S. She was raised mostly in Bridgeport, CT and soon became the eldest of four in a mixed status family. Her writing, primarily in poetry and short story form, is inspired by her life experiences and observations.

She also derives inspiration from her indigenous roots, exploring her identity and honoring her ancestors, one such Macuilxochitzin, an Aztec poetess and storyteller. A trailblazer and artist.

Brenda has been writing since she was 15 years old and expressing herself creatively before that through music, theatre and drawing. And while that was many years ago, much of her writing has been kept amongst an intimate few until now. It became clear that stories need to be shared and her vision and ideas deserved to be expressed because as Audre Lorde said, “Life is very short. What we have to do must be done in the now”.
